Tapestry “Kabuto”

This tapestry is made by mounting the original Asanoha Tenugui  ‘Kabuto’ on Japanese paper.

This work reproduces the old banner flags made to celebrate Boys’ Festival and to wish for the growth of boys, and depicts the heroic helmets and irises in a delicate, yet powerful manner.

Tango-no Sekku began in the Edo period (1603-1867) in the Shogun’s household. When a boy was born, they celebrated his birth by hoisting carp streamers and decorating them with armour. For warriors, armour was an important item of personal protection, and by displaying armour helmets, the wish was expressed that the child would be strongly protected.

Iris, which reaches its peak during the Children’s Day season, has long been used as a medicinal herb and is believed to be effective in driving away evil spirits. The auspicious sound of ‘victory’ and ‘Shobu’, which is unique to events originating from the Shogun family, has been passed down to the present day in the form of plants used to decorate Boys’ Day and the custom of iris baths, together with the wish that boys will grow up strong and vigorous.

This product is also recommended as a gift for Children’s Day interior decoration, births, first festivals, the first meal of the year, wedding celebrations, housewarming celebrations, store-opening celebrations and other festive occasions, together with the auspicious meaning of the design. Kakejiku, a traditional Japanese craft, are also appreciated as gifts for foreign people and as Japanese souvenirs overseas.
