Tenugui Handkerchief”Lattice Pattern with Kabuki Kumadori”
This handkerchief is made using a tenugui with a checkered pattern of kumadori and kabuki props.Kumadori is a makeup technique unique to kabuki that emphasizes facial muscles and expressions, and is considered a symbolic motif of kabuki. The checkerboard pattern is a traditional pattern named after Sanogawa Ichimatsu, a Kabuki actor of the Edo period, who used it as his stage costume and it became very popular. It is an auspicious pattern that has the meaning of “prosperity” because it continues without interruption.
Tenugui is suitable for a handkerchief because of the soft touch of tenugui fabric, Sarashi cotton(bleached cotton cloth), and its excellent water absorbency and quick-drying properties. It can also be used in many ways, such as luncheon mats, coasters, simple masks, and handmade materials.
