Tenugui “Sparkling Fireworks”
parklers bursting with color, these tenugui are sure to liven up your summer mood. An original drawing by Momoko Yamanaka, an artist who is also active as a picture book painter, is used to dye the tenugui. Her picture books, created with her novelist father, Wahei Tatematsu, have been highly acclaimed internationally.
Sparklers are toy fireworks that originated in the Edo period. People compared the stages of sparklers from the time they were lit to the time they burned out to a flower and superimposed their lives on them. The moment when a small sparkling ball is formed is called “bud”, the moment when it bursts into flames is called “matsuba (pine leaf)”, and the moment when the sparkling ball burns out is called “chirigiku (scattered chrysanthemum flower)”.
