Tenugui : Fuji – Rinpa Style

This auspicious Tenugui is dyed based on an Edo-period Rinpa painting. Featuring Mount Fuji, a sacred peak revered as the dwelling of the gods, and winter birds gracefully flying over the water, this design is carefully dyed using the traditional Chusen technique by skilled artisans. The refined aesthetic of Wabi-Sabi, a core principle of Japanese culture, is beautifully expressed in this Tenugui, making it as elegant as a hanging scroll.

The Rinpa school is a prominent artistic movement in Japanese history, founded in the early Edo period by Hon’ami Kōetsu and Tawaraya Sōtatsu, later developed by Ogata Kōrin and Ogata Kenzan, and ultimately established in Edo by Sakai Hōitsu during the late Edo period.

Mount Fuji, Japan’s tallest and most iconic peak, has long been regarded as a sacred place of worship. It has inspired countless works of art, literature, and poetry throughout history. Today, it is recognized as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site and is one of the most globally recognized symbols of Japan. The name “Fuji” is also associated with auspicious meanings, such as immortality and longevity due to its phonetic resemblance to “fushi” (meaning immortality). The mountain’s gracefully spreading base symbolizes prosperity, success, and family fortune.

With its auspicious design, this Tenugui is perfect for New Year decorations, celebratory gifts such as New Year’s greetings, birthdays, baby showers, and first seasonal festivals. As a traditional Japanese handicraft, it also makes a wonderful gift or souvenir for visitors from abroad.
