Tenugui “Japanese Zodiac Serpent”
This is an Eto (Japanese zodiac) Tenugui for celebrating the Year of the Snake in 2025, featuring a coiled white snake resting atop a pile of stacked Koban (gold coins). It is carefully dyed using the traditional Chusen technique by skilled artisans. The design is part of a series by painter Chiho Kari.
Each year, the Toshigami (New Year deity) visits households with the first sunrise of the year, bringing blessings for the coming year. The animals of the twelve zodiac signs are believed to be messengers of the Toshigami, and there is a custom of decorating with the animal of the year to welcome the deity. The snake, the symbol of 2025, represents resurrection and renewal, and is considered an omen of new beginnings.
The white snake in particular is regarded as a messenger of Benzaiten, one of the Seven Lucky Gods, who governs wealth, wisdom, and the arts. It is believed to bring success in studies and business, and many shrines are dedicated to the worship of white snakes. Additionally, as the saying goes, “keeping a snake skin in your wallet will bring wealth,” making the white snake a well-known symbol of financial fortune. The image of the coiled white snake, protecting something at its center with its endless circular shape, symbolizes infinite and everlasting good luck and prosperity.
This Tenugui, with its auspicious design, makes a perfect gift for New Year’s, a decorative item for the season, or a special present for those born in the Year of the Snake. It is also ideal for occasions like birthdays, baby celebrations, and first seasonal festivals. Whether you are seeking to enhance your fortune or looking for a lucky charm for exams or studies, this Tenugui is highly recommended. Additionally, Tenugui, as a traditional Japanese craft, is also a popular gift or souvenir for visitors from abroad.
